Mittal and Poonawalla Assume Control of Rajasthan Royals

The landscape of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has undergone a seismic shift following the announcement that Lakshmi Mittal, the pre-eminent industrialist and “Steel Magnate,” has acquired a majority stake in the Rajasthan Royals. In a mid-season transaction of unprecedented scale, the inaugural IPL champions have transitioned to a new ownership consortium led by Mr Mittal and the billionaire pharmaceutical executive, Adar Poonawalla.

A joint statement released today confirmed the details of the comprehensive ownership restructuring. The agreement values the franchise, alongside its associated international sporting assets, at a total enterprise value of approximately $1.65 billion (roughly £1.3 billion or 20,250 crore BDT). This valuation underscores the exponential growth of the IPL as a global commercial entity and marks one of the most substantial financial acquisitions in the history of professional cricket.

A Convergence of Industrial and Pharmaceutical Power

The new ownership structure represents a strategic partnership between two of India’s most influential corporate dynasties. Lakshmi Mittal, the Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal—the world’s leading steel and mining company—has long been a figure of global industrial significance. By securing a controlling interest, the Mittal family now holds a dominant 75% stake in the franchise.

Joining the venture is Adar Poonawalla, the Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India and Chairman of Poonawalla Fincorp. Based in Pune, the Serum Institute is globally renowned as the largest vaccine manufacturer by volume, and Mr Poonawalla’s acquisition of an 18% stake further diversifies the franchise’s backing.

The remaining equity is retained by the existing investor group, which includes the outgoing majority owner, Manoj Badale. In a move designed to ensure institutional stability, Mr Badale will continue his involvement with the organisation, retaining a seat on the board to provide continuity in governance and long-term strategic planning.

Acquisition of a Global Cricket Portfolio

The $1.65 billion deal is not limited solely to the Indian franchise but encompasses the entire “Royals” global portfolio. This multi-national acquisition grants the new owners oversight of a diverse network of cricket teams, including:

  • Rajasthan Royals: The cornerstone of the group within the Indian Premier League.

  • Paarl Royals: A prominent competitor in South Africa’s SA20 league.

  • Barbados Royals: A successful outfit in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

This comprehensive takeover positions the Mittal and Poonawalla families as major stakeholders in the evolving landscape of global T20 cricket, allowing for cross-continental brand development and talent scouting.

Strategic Vision and Heritage

In the official announcement, Lakshmi Mittal highlighted the personal and cultural significance of the acquisition. Noting that his family’s ancestral roots are firmly planted in the state of Rajasthan, he remarked: “I have a great passion for cricket, and given my family’s ties to Rajasthan, there could be no team closer to my heart than the Rajasthan Royals.”

Adar Poonawalla expressed his enthusiasm for the franchise’s “glorious heritage” and reiterated his commitment to fostering the team’s long-term growth and commercial success. Manoj Badale, welcoming the new stewards, described them as the “ideal custodians” due to their shared ambition and deep-seated connection to India’s sporting and cultural identity.

Ambitions for a Second Championship

The Rajasthan Royals achieved immediate legendary status by winning the first-ever IPL title in 2008 under the inspired leadership of the late Shane Warne. Despite this early triumph, the team has faced an eighteen-year championship drought. However, the current season has seen a significant upturn in fortunes, driven in part by the emergence of high-potential talents such as Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

The team’s performance on the pitch reflects this renewed vigour; they currently sit in fourth place on the league table with 12 points from 10 matches. With only a single point separating them from the league-leading Punjab Kings, the Royals remain a primary contender for the title. The infusion of capital and the strategic oversight provided by the Mittal and Poonawalla families are expected to provide the necessary impetus for the franchise to finally reclaim its position at the summit of the IPL.
