A violent incident in Sherpur Upazila, Bogura District has left a 24-year-old man dead after he was allegedly beaten by a mob while attempting to steal an electricity transformer, in a case that has also left another individual critically injured.
The deceased, identified as Fajle Rabbi, son of Bulu Mia, hailed from Natabari village under Gosaibari Union in neighbouring Dhunat Upazila, Bogura District. He was reportedly employed as an electrical technician. The injured companion, Jahangir Hossain (30), is also from the same village and is currently receiving treatment under police custody.
According to local accounts, the incident occurred shortly after 2:00 am on Tuesday in Chandeshwar village under Kusumba Union. Residents claimed they noticed suspicious activity near the agricultural fields of farmer Ramzan Ali, where an electricity transformer was allegedly being dismantled for theft. Villagers from nearby Chandeshwar and Akrampur quickly mobilised, intercepting the two men at the scene.
What followed, however, escalated into a brutal act of mob violence. Instead of handing the suspects over immediately to authorities, a group of locals allegedly beat both men severely before police could intervene.
Police later confirmed that the injured were transported to Sherpur Upazila Health Complex at around 5:00 am on Wednesday. Medical officers declared Fajle Rabbi dead upon arrival, while Jahangir Hossain remains under treatment in a serious condition.
A police official from Sherpur Police Station, Sub-Inspector Tofazzzal Hossain, stated that the body had been recovered and sent for post-mortem examination. He added that legal procedures are underway and preparations are being made to file a case in connection with the incident. Authorities also confirmed that the injured suspect remains under police supervision in hospital.
The tragic episode has once again highlighted concerns over mob justice in rural Bangladesh, where suspected criminals are often subjected to collective violence before formal legal processes take place.
| Name | Age | Origin | Role | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Jahangir Hossain | 30 | Natabari village, Dhunat Upazila | Associate (accused) | Injured, under treatment |
Authorities have urged local residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to ensure that suspects are handed over to law enforcement for proper investigation and due legal process.
