One Dead and 20 Injured in Bhairab Market Dispute

A violent clash between residents of two neighboring villages in Kishoreganj district turned bloody on Monday morning, leaving one man dead and at least 20 others wounded following a renewed flare-up over a local market’s identity.

The confrontation broke out around 8:00 AM within the Kalikaprasad Union of Bhairab Upazila, as villagers from Akbarnagar and Mirarchar faced off along the main thoroughfare.

A Thirty-Year Feud Reaches Breaking Point

The root of Monday’s tragedy lies in a dispute spanning three decades. At the heart of the disagreement is a busy commercial area positioned along the Bhairab-Kishoreganj regional highway, which straddles the boundary between Akbarnagar and Mirarchar. Both communities have long asserted naming rights over the market, viewing the designation as a matter of local authority and regional prestige.

After several days of heightened friction between the two factions, the long-simmering hostility turned into direct physical conflict on Monday morning.

Details of Casualties and Hospital Transport

The victim who lost his life has been identified as 30-year-old Masud Miah, an auto-rickshaw driver hailing from Mirarchar village and the son of Asad Miah.

The violent encounter left a further 20 people injured. Emergency responders and local residents evacuated the wounded to the Bhairab Upazila Health Complex as well as several private healthcare facilities across the district. A number of victims in critical condition were subsequently referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for urgent, specialized medical attention.

“Police forces were deployed to the site immediately after we were informed of the clash,” noted Limon Bose, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhairab Police Station. “A preliminary inquest on the deceased has been conducted, and the body will be sent to the Kishoreganj Sadar Hospital morgue for a formal post-mortem.”

Highway Blocked as Security Heightened

The intensity of the fighting forced a complete shutdown of transit along the Bhairab-Kishoreganj regional highway, causing substantial delays for commuters and freight vehicles during peak morning hours.

Police forces remain on active duty throughout the area to clear the highway, restore vehicular movement, and maintain calm between the opposing villages. Local law enforcement has launched an official enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the riot, with officers maintaining a visible presence to deter potential reprise attacks.
