A Special Sessions Court in Mymensingh has sentenced a man to death for the brutal murder of his mother-in-law in a case that stemmed from long-standing domestic disputes in Haluaghat upazila.
The convicted individual, Sujit Shil, aged 42, was found guilty of killing his mother-in-law, Jyotsna Rani, aged 65, during a violent attack at their family home. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Judge Farhana Ferdous at the Special Sessions Judge Court in Mymensingh. In addition to the death penalty, the court also imposed a fine of 30,000 taka on the convicted man.
According to court proceedings and case records, the incident occurred on 6 October 2021 in the Koichapur Board Bazar area under Haluaghat upazila. The accused had ongoing domestic tensions with his wife, Iti Rani Shil, and her mother over family matters. These disputes allegedly escalated into repeated quarrels within the household.
On the night of the incident, when other family members were asleep, Sujit Shil allegedly launched a sudden and violent attack. Prosecutors stated that he first assaulted his wife with the intention of killing her, inflicting severe injuries. He then turned on his mother-in-law, attacking her with a machete and a knife, causing critical wounds.
The victims’ cries alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the scene and rescued them. Both were initially taken to Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital due to the severity of their injuries. Jyotsna Rani succumbed to her injuries the following morning while undergoing treatment.
A murder case was subsequently filed by the victim’s elder daughter, initiating a lengthy judicial process that included witness testimonies, examination of medical reports, and cross-examinations by both prosecution and defence. After reviewing the evidence and concluding arguments, the court delivered its verdict, sentencing the accused to death.
