Mother Vanishes After Leaving Two Daughters Behind

Two young girls were rescued by police in Dinajpur’s Hakimpur Upazila after allegedly being left alone on a roadside by their mother, who reportedly told them she was going to collect some money before disappearing. The incident has drawn attention to the family’s apparent financial hardship, while police have begun efforts to trace the children’s relatives and locate their missing mother.

The incident occurred around midday on Sunday, 19 July, near the Thana intersection in front of Gate No. 4 of Hili Land Port. According to local residents, the two girls were found sitting on the veranda of a nearby office, crying and waiting for their mother to return.

Local resident Moazzem Hossain said he first noticed the children shortly before 10:00 a.m. When he approached them, they explained that their mother had left with their younger brother in her arms, telling them, “Stay here, I’ll come back with some money.” Hours passed, but she never returned.

Concerned by their condition, Moazzem bought food for the girls in an attempt to comfort them. Despite his efforts, they refused to eat and continued crying while waiting for their mother. Realising the seriousness of the situation, he informed Hakimpur Police Station.

Police officers arrived at the scene soon afterwards and took the children into protective custody. They are currently being cared for at the police station while authorities work to reunite them with their family.

Officer-in-Charge Zakir Hossain of Hakimpur Police Station said preliminary inquiries indicate that the girls’ father, identified as Jibon, lives in Dhaka and is reportedly struggling with drug addiction. According to the information gathered so far, the family has been living in severe financial hardship.

Police said the children’s mother, Shahnaz Begum, allegedly left her two elder daughters, Jimi and Jannati, by the roadside while taking her youngest child with her. Before leaving, she reportedly reassured the girls that she would return after bringing money. However, she has not been seen since.

Investigators have also confirmed that the family is originally from Ghoraghat Upazila in Dinajpur District. The children’s grandparents are believed to be alive, and police are now trying to contact them so that the girls can be handed over to responsible family members in a safe and lawful manner.

Authorities stressed that ensuring the children’s welfare remains the immediate priority. At the same time, efforts are continuing to locate Shahnaz Begum and determine the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. Police said all necessary legal procedures will be followed while the investigation remains ongoing.
