A 32-year-old motorcyclist died on the spot on Thursday morning after his vehicle collided with a speeding passenger bus on the Patuakhali–Kuakata highway. The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 am near the Dhalugajir Moor intersection, situated within Patuakhali Sadar Upazila.
The deceased was identified as Md Atik, a resident of Jamura village in the Laukathi Union of Patuakhali Sadar. He was the son of local resident Maulana Ashraf Howlader.
According to statements from local residents and law enforcement officials, Atik was riding his motorcycle along the arterial regional highway when a northbound passenger bus operated by Sikder Paribahan, travelling in the opposite direction, struck his motorcycle head-on. The sheer force of the impact flung Atik off his bike onto the hard tarmac, causing severe traumatic injuries that resulted in his immediate death before emergency assistance could arrive.
Following the collision, the driver of the Sikder Paribahan bus fled the scene immediately without stopping to render assistance. The sudden hit-and-run caused brief confusion among onlookers and nearby shopkeepers. Upon receiving notification from local bystanders, a team from Patuakhali Sadar Police Station dispatched to the scene, recovered Atik’s body, and cleared his heavily damaged motorcycle from the carriageway.
The fatality caused significant traffic disruption along the Patuakhali–Kuakata regional corridor, a vital route connecting the central district to popular coastal destinations. Transport came to a standstill at Dhalugajir Moor for roughly 45 minutes as curious crowds gathered and police secured the area. Normal traffic flow resumed once officers managed the scene and restored order.
Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station, confirmed the details of the crash, stating that police officers are actively working to trace the bus, verify its vehicle registration, and identify the driver responsible. He added that formal inquest procedures for the body are under way and that law enforcement will take strict legal action under applicable transport safety laws.
The Patuakhali–Kuakata highway serves as one of the southern region’s busiest thoroughfares, accommodating a dense daily volume of long-distance coaches, freight lorries, localized public transport, and two-wheelers. Local community members expressed heightened anxiety over the recurring vulnerability of motorcyclists on this stretch, where high-speed overtaking maneuvers at sharp turns and intersections remain a constant hazard.
