A man was injured after unidentified assailants opened fire from a motorcycle in the Mohakhali area of the capital on Thursday night, in what police describe as a sudden and indiscriminate attack.
The victim, identified as 40-year-old Rofiqul Islam, is currently receiving treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being admitted with a gunshot wound to his left thigh. Doctors have since performed a minor surgical procedure to remove the bullet.
Rofiqul Islam is employed on a contractual, outsourced basis at the Dhaka Dental College Hospital in Mirpur-14. He resides at the staff quarters of the Institute of Public Health (IPH) in Mohakhali.
According to his sister, Rasheda Begum, who spoke to reporters on Friday morning at the hospital, the incident occurred at approximately 10:15 pm on Thursday. She stated that her brother was standing in front of the old Kacha Bazar area in Mohakhali when a group of five to six individuals arrived on motorcycles. Without any prior warning or confrontation, they allegedly opened fire indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
She added that the family remains unaware of the motive behind the attack and cannot identify any individuals who may have targeted her brother. The sudden nature of the shooting has left relatives shocked and searching for answers.
Police stationed at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital confirmed that the victim was brought in shortly after the incident. An officer from the hospital police outpost, Inspector Md. Faruk, stated that surgeons successfully extracted a bullet from Rofiqul Islam’s thigh during treatment. His condition is reported to be stable, although he remains under medical observation.
Law enforcement officials have yet to confirm any arrests in connection with the incident. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive, identify the perpetrators, and establish whether the shooting was targeted or random in nature.
