Born on 10 March 1942 in Jalpaiguri, Samaresh Majumdar spent his childhood amid the tea gardens and natural landscapes of the Dooars region. The environment of North Bengal later became an enduring influence on his literary imagination and narrative style. He completed his early education at Jalpaiguri Zilla School before graduating from Scottish Church College. He later obtained a postgraduate degree from University of Calcutta.
During his professional life, Majumdar worked with Anandabazar Patrika, one of the leading Bengali-language newspapers in India. Alongside journalism, he maintained a strong interest in group theatre, an influence that contributed significantly to the dramatic quality and vivid dialogues found in many of his literary works.
His literary career began with the story Onnyomatra, originally written as a stage play and later published in the Bengali literary magazine Desh in 1967. His first novel, Dour, was published in 1976 and established him firmly in Bengali literary circles.
Samaresh Majumdar’s literary range extended across novels, short stories, travel writing, and children’s literature. His characters were often grounded in social reality and reflected the aspirations, anxieties, and conflicts of contemporary Bengali society.
