Munich Re to Acquire At-Bay for $575 Million

Munich Re is set to acquire US-based cyber insurance provider At-Bay for an enterprise value of $575 million, strengthening the German insurance group’s position in the rapidly expanding cyber insurance market.

Munich Re announced the agreement on Wednesday, 19 August, saying the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of next year, subject to the necessary conditions being met.

At-Bay specialises in cyber insurance and related risk management services for businesses. The acquisition will give Munich Re greater exposure to the US cyber insurance market, where demand has grown as companies face increasingly complex digital threats and the financial consequences of cyber incidents.

The deal values At-Bay at $575 million on an enterprise-value basis. The transaction represents another significant move by a major global insurer into a specialist area of insurance that has become increasingly important as businesses rely more heavily on digital systems, cloud services and interconnected networks.

Cyber insurance has developed rapidly as companies seek protection against losses arising from incidents such as ransomware attacks, data breaches and interruptions to digital operations. Insurers, however, also face challenges in assessing these risks because the nature and scale of cyber threats can change quickly.

Munich Re, one of the world’s largest reinsurers and insurance groups, has extensive experience in analysing complex and emerging risks. Its acquisition of At-Bay reflects the growing strategic importance of cyber risk within the broader insurance industry.

For At-Bay, the transaction provides an opportunity to become part of a major international insurance group while continuing to build on its specialist expertise in cyber risk. The US market remains particularly important for cyber insurance, given the large concentration of technology-dependent businesses and the significant financial exposure associated with cyber incidents.

The acquisition is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2027. Until completion, the transaction remains subject to the applicable closing conditions and regulatory requirements.

The deal comes as insurers globally reassess their exposure to cyber threats and seek specialist capabilities to manage a market where underwriting risks are evolving alongside technological change. Munich Re’s move to acquire At-Bay therefore highlights the increasing importance of cyber insurance as a distinct and strategically significant segment of the global insurance industry.
