Neck-Slit Body Recovered On Meghna River In Barishal

A shocking incident has gripped Hijla Upazila in Barishal, where the body of a young man was recovered from the Meghna River with his throat slit. The local police have classified the case as “mysterious” and launched a full-scale investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Md. Amir Hossain, a resident of Char Ghasia village in Ward 2 of Uttar Charbanshi Union, Raipur Upazila, Lakshmipur District. Amir, the eldest son of farmer Shopan Hawladar, regularly fished in the Meghna River to supplement his family’s modest income.

According to police and local sources, Amir left home early on 20 January for his usual fishing routine. As the morning passed and he failed to return by midday, his family became increasingly concerned. Around 11:00 am, the river police recovered his body from the riverbank in Bayarchar, Barjalia Union, Hijla. The presence of a deep wound on his neck has led authorities to suspect premeditated murder.

Local businessman Rakib Hossain reported that Amir’s family received confirmation of his death from Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital at approximately 5:00 pm. The news has left the family and entire village in mourning. According to relatives, Amir had no known personal enemies, although disputes over river fishing rights are not uncommon in the area.

Following recovery, Amir’s body was sent to the morgue of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officer-in-Charge of Hijla Police Station, Md. Adil Hossain, stated that the case is highly suspicious. Investigators are considering all possibilities, including personal enmity, robbery, or prior conflicts linked to fishing. He confirmed that the exact cause of death and full circumstances will be revealed once the post-mortem report is completed. A case has been filed, but no arrests have been made to date.

Local residents expressed growing concern over increasing violence and criminal incidents around the Meghna River, a crucial source of livelihood for the community. They have called for a swift and impartial investigation, urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. Police have assured the family that the investigation will be thorough and no lapses will be tolerated.
