Civil defence teams operating in the besieged Gaza Strip have extracted 19 bodies—predominantly women and children—from the rubble of a destroyed residential complex in the western sector of Gaza City. The painstaking recovery operation at the ‘Karam’ building concluded on Saturday following four days of intensive searching, carried out under severely constrained conditions due to an acute shortage of heavy machinery and specialised rescue equipment.

Civil defence official Mohammad Abu Dan, who supervised the effort, confirmed the completion of the four-day search at the Karam site. He noted that the specialised medical personnel and rescue units would immediately redeploy to another location within Gaza City to commence further search and extraction operations.

Rescue personnel have repeatedly highlighted the formidable challenges hindering their work. Lacking hydraulic equipment, cranes, and heavy machinery capable of lifting massive concrete slabs, workers have been forced to rely on rudimentary hand tools and manual labour to shift tons of debris left behind by Israeli bombardment.

High Casualty Toll and Equipment Deficits

The Gazan Ministry of Health estimates that more than 8,000 individuals remain missing across the territory, presumably trapped beneath the detritus of pulverized buildings. The lack of functional infrastructure and fuel shortages continue to impede civil defence teams from reaching trapped victims in a timely manner, significantly reducing the likelihood of finding survivors.
