A Chattogram court has placed notorious underworld figure Mubarak Hossain Emon, widely known as David Emon, on a five-day police remand in connection with an extortion case filed at Hathazari Police Station. The ruling was delivered on Wednesday afternoon by Chattogram Second Judicial Magistrate Lokman Hakim following a formal remand hearing.
Law enforcement authorities have previously registered at least eighteen criminal cases against Emon, including charges related to a high-profile double murder. Court Inspector Habibur Rahman confirmed that investigators initially sought a seven-day police custody order to interrogate the suspect thoroughly regarding the extortion charges. After reviewing the arguments presented during the proceedings, the magistrate approved a five-day remand period.
This latest legal hurdle compounds an already mounting stack of criminal charges for the suspect. Earlier in the month, specifically on 2 August, police sought separate five-day remands for Emon in connection with a murder case and a separate firearms case registered at Fatikchhari Police Station.
Emon’s apprehension occurred in the early hours of 29 July, when law enforcement intercepted a vehicle along the Jhumjhum area of the Narail-Jessore highway. Officers arrested him alongside three alleged associates during the roadside operation. The following day, he was formally shown arrested across three distinct pending cases and dispatched to jail pending further legal procedures. With the newly approved remand for the Hathazari extortion case, investigators anticipate uncovering deeper insights into his criminal network and operational associates during his time in custody.
