Parents Die Saving Three Children

A husband and wife died in a house fire after reportedly rescuing their three children from their burning home in Dhaka’s Dohar Upozela.

The incident took place at around 1:30 am on Friday night, 8 May, in Bilashpur Radhanagar village of Dohar, Dhaka. According to local residents, a fire suddenly broke out at the residence of Abdus Salam Shikdar and his wife Nasima Begum.

Witnesses said that after noticing the flames, the couple became desperate to save their children. As the fire spread rapidly through the house, they managed to throw their three children out through a window to safety. After ensuring the children were outside, the couple reportedly cried out for help as the blaze intensified.

By that stage, much of the house had already been engulfed in flames. The fire spread quickly through the tin-and-wood structure, trapping the couple inside. Local residents gathered after hearing their screams and attempted to extinguish the fire using available means before emergency responders arrived.

Despite these efforts, Abdus Salam Shikdar and Nasima Begum were unable to escape and died at the scene.

Several units from the Fire Service and Civil Defence later arrived at the location after being informed of the incident. Firefighters worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control, finally containing it at around 4:00 am.

The entire house, which was constructed mainly from corrugated tin sheets and timber, was completely destroyed in the fire.

Speaking about the incident, Abu Bakar Siddique, Officer-in-Charge of Dohar Police Station, confirmed that Salam and his wife died at the scene.

He said the bodies were later recovered and taken to the police station. Preparations are underway for post-mortem examinations.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire. Police said investigators are examining whether the incident resulted from an accident or any form of sabotage.

No injuries to the three rescued children were reported immediately after the incident.

The fire has left the family’s home entirely gutted, while authorities continue their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
