Mid-air medical emergencies present some of the most critical challenges aviation crews can face, requiring split-second decisions that balance passenger safety, aircraft logistics, and medical urgency. Despite the rapid response of the flight deck crew and ground medical teams, a middle-aged female passenger could not be saved after sudden illness struck during the long-haul journey.
According to an official press release issued by Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, the public relations officer at Shah Amanat International Airport, the harrowing incident unfolded aboard Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-136. The aircraft had departed from the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, carrying numerous expatriates and travellers bound for Chattogram. Shortly after the plane cleared Saudi airspace and settled into its cruising altitude, a 55-year-old female passenger, identified as Sanoara Begum, experienced a severe and sudden deterioration in her health.
As panic and concern rippled through the cabin, the flight crew immediately swung into action. Cabin crew members rushed to provide emergency first aid while simultaneously broadcasting a call for any medical professionals on board to step forward and assist. Recognising the gravity of the situation and noting that her condition was rapidly declining, the aircraft commander made the critical decision to bypass the original flight path. To secure immediate, advanced medical intervention, the pilot contacted air traffic control and requested an emergency diversion to the nearest major facility, routing the wide-body aircraft toward Muscat International Airport in Oman.
Upon touchdown in Muscat, airport ground operations and emergency medical responders acted with utmost swiftness. An awaiting medical team boarded the aircraft to assess the passenger and safely transferred her to the airport’s specialized medical facility. However, despite the urgent resuscitation efforts and medical evaluations performed by the duty physicians, Sanoara Begum was officially pronounced dead at the scene.
