Police have launched an investigation after a brick fragment landed in front of a security vehicle accompanying Prime Minister Tarek Rahman’s motorcade while he was travelling by road to Barishal. Investigators are examining whether the incident was the result of an accident or whether the object was deliberately thrown. The matter has attracted widespread public attention after a video of the incident circulated on social media.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, 13 July, near Sadhur Bridge in the Rajoir upazila of Madaripur, along the Dhaka–Barishal Highway. The Prime Minister had departed Dhaka earlier that morning by bus for an official visit to Barishal.
Ahead of the visit, large numbers of BNP leaders, activists and supporters had gathered at various points along the highway. Many stood on both sides of the road to greet the passing motorcade as it travelled towards its destination.
According to footage shared online, the bus carrying the Prime Minister had already crossed the Sadhur Bridge area when a brick fragment struck the front section of a Special Security Force (SSF) jeep assigned to the convoy’s security detail. Security personnel immediately assessed the situation before allowing the motorcade to continue its journey without interruption.
No injuries or significant damage were reported in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
Law enforcement agencies have since begun a detailed inquiry to establish exactly how the brick fragment came into contact with the security vehicle. Investigators are reviewing available video footage, examining the scene and collecting statements from witnesses in the surrounding area.
One of the central questions is whether the fragment was unintentionally propelled by the wheel of another moving vehicle or intentionally thrown at the convoy. Officials say every possible scenario is being examined before any conclusion is reached.
Madaripur Superintendent of Police Habibur Rahman said investigators were carefully analysing all available evidence. He explained that authorities were working to determine whether the brick fragment had been dislodged accidentally by passing traffic or whether there had been any deliberate act targeting the convoy.
He stressed that no definitive conclusion could be drawn until the investigation had been completed and all relevant evidence had been assessed.
Road movements involving heads of government and other senior state officials are typically protected by extensive security arrangements. These generally include increased police deployment, traffic management measures, intelligence monitoring and multiple layers of close protection designed to minimise risks and ensure the safe passage of official convoys.
The Prime Minister reached Batajor in Gournadi, Barishal, shortly before 10:00 a.m., where he participated in a series of official and public engagement programmes throughout the day. After completing the scheduled engagements, he departed Barishal by road at around 6:30 p.m. for the return journey to Dhaka.
Although videos of the incident have spread widely across social media platforms, police have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information or speculation while the investigation remains ongoing. Officials have said the actual cause of the incident will be disclosed only after the inquiry has been completed and all findings have been formally reviewed.
