Deschamps Backs France Before Spain Showdown

France head coach Didier Deschamps has struck a confident tone ahead of his side’s FIFA World Cup semi-final against Spain, insisting that his team is fully prepared for one of the toughest tests in international football. While acknowledging Spain’s impressive form and quality, the veteran manager made it clear that France’s objective remains unchanged: secure victory and book a place in the World Cup final.

The semi-final carries added significance for Deschamps personally. A victory would make him the first coach in World Cup history to guide his national team to the tournament final on three separate occasions, adding another remarkable achievement to an already distinguished managerial career.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Deschamps praised Spain as one of the strongest teams in the competition but stressed that France are equally aware of their own strengths. He revealed that just as Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and his staff have carefully studied the French squad, France’s coaching team has conducted an equally thorough assessment of their opponents.

Deschamps highlighted Spain’s tactical discipline, describing them as a side that enjoys dominating possession, presses aggressively without the ball and remains highly organised defensively. In his view, the outcome of the semi-final is likely to depend on which team controls possession more effectively and capitalises on the chances created during the match.

Asked about Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, Deschamps acknowledged that the winger is extremely difficult to stop in one-on-one situations because of his pace, creativity and technical ability. At the same time, he pointed out that Spain will also face significant challenges when dealing with France’s own attacking talent. Rather than focusing on individual battles, he suggested that the contest would ultimately be decided by collective performance across the pitch.

The French coach also dismissed any suggestion that the fixture should be viewed as an opportunity for revenge over previous encounters between the two nations. According to Deschamps, history has little influence on a World Cup semi-final. The only thing that matters is the opportunity to reach the final, and both teams will be striving to seize it.

France captain Kylian Mbappé’s fitness was another major topic during the press conference. Deschamps expressed confidence that his captain will be ready despite recent injury concerns. He explained that Mbappé has continued to train regularly and is progressing well, giving the coaching staff every reason to believe he will be available for the crucial encounter.

Questions were also raised about whether the team’s journey from Boston to Dallas could affect player performance. Deschamps dismissed those concerns, explaining that finishing top of their group allowed France to follow their planned preparation schedule. The squad has also benefited from four days of recovery before the semi-final, which he believes has helped minimise the impact of travel. He added that matches of this magnitude are decided as much by mental resilience as physical condition.

Deschamps again underlined his respect for Spain, describing them as one of the tournament’s most balanced teams. Their ability to combine disciplined defending with fluid attacking football has made them formidable opponents throughout the competition. Even so, he remains convinced that France possess the quality required to compete at the highest level and expects an entertaining contest between two of Europe’s footballing heavyweights.

Selection for the starting line-up remains one of the biggest decisions facing the French manager. Deschamps said Aurélien Tchouaméni, Manu Koné, Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola are all capable of making a decisive impact, making team selection particularly challenging. He emphasised that each player’s fitness, recent form and tactical suitability for the match will be carefully assessed before the final line-up is confirmed.

Providing an update on Tchouaméni, Deschamps admitted that the midfielder has not yet returned to full fitness after spending nearly two weeks away from competitive action. Nevertheless, he is now available for selection, which represents a significant boost for France ahead of such an important fixture.

When asked whether Doué or Barcola would start, Deschamps declined to reveal his plans. He said both players are ready to contribute and that the final decision will depend on the tactical demands of the match rather than the identity of the opponent.

As anticipation builds for the World Cup semi-final, Deschamps believes the encounter will showcase two technically gifted and tactically disciplined sides competing for a place on football’s biggest stage. With a place in the final at stake, he expects both France and Spain to produce performances worthy of the occasion in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most compelling matches.
