Political Row Sparks Over Inadequate Flooding Response

Nahid Islam, the Convener of the National Citizen’s Party (NCP) and Opposition Whip in Parliament, has sharply criticised the interim administration’s sluggish emergency response to catastrophic floods and structural waterlogging in Chittagong. Speaking to journalists on Sunday afternoon during a relief distribution effort at the Dobhashi Bazar area under the Raipur Union in Anwara Upazila, Islam expressed immense frustration over the state’s failure to mitigate the escalating humanitarian crisis.

Addressing the press corp alongside students and local volunteers, the NCP leader refused to get bogged down in bureaucratic finger-pointing, arguing that immediate civilian survival must override administrative blame. ‘For whatever reason, the government is failing to deliver,’ Islam remarked. ‘Assigning blame at this stage yields nothing; the fundamental reality is that ordinary people are enduring immense, preventable suffering.’ He issued an urgent appeal to affluent citizens, students, and civic organisations to forge a unified front across political divides to deliver aid to marooned households.

The high-profile relief drive was heavily supported by prominent student leaders, including Abu Baker Majumder, the Central General Secretary of Chhatra Shakti, and Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi, a key coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Their presence underscored the deepening alliance between the formal political opposition and the student networks that remain pivotal in driving grassroots relief operations across the country’s devastated southern terrain.

Islam revealed that structural neglect in regional water management has been a recurring point of contention within parliamentary debates. ‘We have continuously raised our voices in the House regarding the Teesta Mega Plan and the broader disaster management budget. Whenever seasonal downpours strike Cox’s Bazar, the Hill Tracts, and the wider Chittagong division, we have demanded systemic interventions,’ he stated. He pointed out the apparent disconnect within the executive branch, noting that whilst the Disaster Management and Relief Minister routinely assures parliament of adequate contingencies, media reports indicate that the Prime Minister herself is profoundly dissatisfied with the widespread inertia exhibited by local administrative bodies and ruling party activists.

The Opposition Whip saved his harshest remarks for the dilapidated state of coastal embankments in Anwara, linking the severe waterlogging directly to historical financial malfeasance. He observed that hundreds of families had been left entirely isolated for nearly a week without receiving any state assistance or visits from their local representatives. According to Islam, the perennial inundation of these rural enclaves is artificial, driven entirely by structural decay and systemic corruption under the ousted Awami League regime, during which millions of Taka earmarked for embankment repairs were systematically plundered.

Vowing to enforce strict legislative oversight, Islam promised that the opposition would scrutinise every penny allocated in the current fiscal budget for coastal defence infrastructure. ‘We will not allow a single Taka to be looted or misappropriated this time around,’ he asserted. The NCP delegation, flanked by regional organisers like Hasnat Abdullah, announced that their independent relief operations would expand from Anwara into neighbouring Banshkhali and other flood-impacted southern districts to provide essential medical aid, clean water, and dry rations to vulnerable communities.
