In a significant development within Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape, the National Citizen Party (NCP) has formally entered into an alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami as part of a broader ten-party coalition. The move is being positioned as an effort to translate the aspirations that emerged in the aftermath of the mass uprising into a practical and unified political programme.

The alliance was officially announced on Sunday night (28 December) during an emergency press briefing held at the NCP’s temporary office in Banglamotor, Dhaka. Addressing journalists, NCP Convener Nahid Islam stated that the decision to align with Jamaat-e-Islami was driven by the necessity of forging a wider political consensus. He emphasised that fragmented opposition politics would be insufficient to meet public expectations for democratic reform, accountability, and structural change.

According to senior party sources, the ten-party alliance has already begun seat-sharing negotiations ahead of the forthcoming national election. Under this emerging framework, several NCP leaders are expected to contest parliamentary seats in both the capital and various districts across the country. While the discussions remain ongoing, a preliminary list of potential candidates has been informally finalised and circulated within political circles.

In Dhaka, Nahid Islam himself is being considered for the Dhaka-11 constituency, while other prominent figures such as Javed Rasim, Engineer Nabila Tahsin, Dilshana Parul, and Nasiruddin Patwary are being discussed for different city seats. Beyond the capital, the NCP is reportedly seeking representation in strategically important districts in the north, south, and coastal regions, signalling an ambition to establish a nationwide electoral footprint.

Party insiders caution, however, that the list should not be regarded as final. Ongoing consultations with alliance partners, local political dynamics, and strategic considerations may result in revisions, substitutions, or reallocations of constituencies. A senior leader involved in the negotiations noted that flexibility would be essential to maintaining unity within the ten-party bloc.

An official announcement detailing the final seat-sharing arrangement and confirmed candidates is expected to be made on Monday evening. Political observers suggest that the Jamaat-NCP partnership could reshape opposition politics, potentially influencing voter alignments and introducing new variables into the electoral contest ahead.
