The highest governing body for Qawmi madrasas in Bangladesh, Al-Haiatus Uppil Lil-Jami’atil Qawmiya Bangladesh, has expressed profound concern over the alleged physical abuse of a seven-year-old residential student at an educational institution in Savar. In response to the disturbing incident reported in the Purba Shahibag area, the central board has announced the formation of a special investigation committee to look into the administrative and managerial circumstances surrounding the case.
The action follows a criminal case filed at the Savar Model Police Station on 26 August, pursuant to a court order. The case names four teachers and six students after allegations surfaced that the young child was subjected to prolonged physical violence. According to official statements issued by Mu. Osiur Rahman, office manager of Al-Haiatul Ulya, the victim’s family claimed that institutional authorities ignored initial complaints and instead coerced the family into remaining silent.
Although Al-Haiatul Ulya clarified that the implicated madrasa does not fall under its jurisdiction or that of its six affiliated boards, the governing body stressed the urgency of a thorough inquiry. Because the institution operates independently, direct administrative intervention remains limited; however, the newly formed committee aims to assess the broader management failures that permitted such conduct.
Al-Haiatul Ulya urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift, impartial investigation, calling on the local madrasa administration to cooperate fully rather than shielding or aiding any accused individuals. The board underscored that if the allegations are proven, legal measures must take their course regardless of the offender’s position or identity.
To prevent similar incidents, the board issued strict directives to all affiliated Qawmi madrasas across the country, instructing administrators to strengthen oversight for residential pupils, maintain a child-friendly atmosphere, and report any unlawful acts to law enforcement immediately rather than attempting internal cover-ups.
