Remembering Mohammed Rafi: The Immortal Voice of Indian Cinema

“Yeh Duniya, Yeh Mehfil Mere Kaam Ki Nahin…” or “Chahunga Main Tujhe Saanjh Savere…”—these timeless melodies once captivated an entire subcontinent, and that very voice continues to resonate deeply within millions of hearts. Transcending the boundaries of time, he remains immortal to music enthusiasts worldwide. He is none other than the legendary playback singer, Mohammed Rafi.

Born on 24 December 1924 in the village of Kotla Sultan Singh in Punjab, British India, Rafi was the fourth of six sons born to Hajji Ali Mohammad. Affectionately nicknamed “Pheeko” by his family, his journey into music began in his early childhood when he started mimicking the devotional bhajans of a village fakir. This nascent fascination with sound eventually steered him towards the rigorous pursuit of classical music.

By the mid-1940s, his profound devotion to music led him to undergo formal training under esteemed maestros. He honed his craft under the tutelage of renowned classical figures such as Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwan Lal Matto, and Firoz Nizami. Even earlier, at the tender age of 13, he made his first public appearance in Lahore at a concert featuring the legendary singer K. L. Saigal, instantly capturing the audience’s attention.

His professional debut as a film playback singer took place in Lahore in 1941, under the musical direction of Shyam Sunder. Shortly afterwards, he relocated to Bombay, where he established a regular presence in the Hindi film industry. A remarkable ascent began in 1949, driven by collaborations with luminaries like Naushad, Shyam Sunder, and Husanlal Bhagatram.

For the next four decades, Rafi reigned supreme as an undisputed titan of Indian cinematic music. He became the preferred voice for virtually every major composer of his era, including Naushad, O. P. Nayyar, Shankar-Jaikishan, Sachin Dev Burman, Madan Mohan, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

His creative output with these directors was staggering. Under Naushad alone, he recorded 149 songs, 81 of which were solos. His partnership with Shankar-Jaikishan yielded 341 songs, with 216 performed solo. His voice elevated numerous cinematic masterpieces scored by Sachin Dev Burman, such as Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Guide, Aradhana, and Abhimaan.

Composer O. P. Nayyar once paid him a striking tribute, remarking that where Mohammed Rafi was absent, O. P. Nayyar was absent too. This single sentence encapsulates the monumental stature of Rafi’s artistry.

Spanning from 1945 to 1980, his extensive career produced thousands of tracks. He excelled across a diverse range of genres, encompassing classical numbers, ghazals, qawwalis, bhajans, patriotic anthems, romantic ballads, melancholic tunes, and comedic numbers. Beyond Hindi, he recorded in Bengali, Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Kannada, Odia, Bhojpuri, Assamese, Sindhi, Persian, English, Dutch, and Spanish, elevating himself to a unique echelon in global music.

On 31 July 1980, at the age of just 55, the maestro passed away. Yet his departure marked only the loss of a physical presence, as his extraordinary voice continues to endure. Every new generation rediscovers his unmatched emotional depth and vocal brilliance. As long as the world holds music, Mohammed Rafi will forever remain enshrined in the hearts of those who cherish melody.
