Abdur Razzaq: Architect of Bangladesh’s Democratic Struggle

Few political figures have left as profound an imprint on Bangladesh’s journey towards independence and democracy as Abdur Razzaq. Remembered as one of the country’s foremost political organisers, he played a decisive role in shaping the movement that ultimately led to the birth of Bangladesh. On the anniversary of his birth, tributes continue to honour a leader whose contributions extended from the student movements of the 1960s to the country’s post-independence democratic struggles.

Born on 1 August 1942 in South Damudya village of Damudya upazila in Shariatpur district, Abdur Razzaq emerged as one of the most influential student leaders of his generation. His political life coincided with a defining period in the history of the Bengali nation, and he became one of the principal planners behind the movement for self-determination that culminated in the Liberation War of 1971.

His political activism began during his student years. After completing his Secondary School Certificate from Damudya Muslim High School in 1958 and Higher Secondary Certificate from Dhaka College in 1960, he enrolled in the Department of Political Science at the University of Dhaka. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Political Science in 1964 before obtaining an LLB degree in 1967. In 1973, he was formally enrolled as an advocate with the Bangladesh Bar Council.

Abdur Razzaq joined the Bangladesh Chhatra League in 1962, a decision that would define the course of his political career. That same year, alongside Sirajul Alam Khan and Kazi Aref Ahmed, he formed the influential three-member “Nucleus” within the student organisation. The group’s strategic political planning is widely regarded as having transformed the autonomy movement into a full-fledged struggle for independence, eventually paving the way for the armed Liberation War.

As one of the Chhatra League’s most effective organisers, Razzaq served in several key leadership positions. He was elected General Secretary of the organisation for two consecutive terms between 1965 and 1967, helping to mobilise students across East Pakistan during a period of mounting political unrest.

He played a prominent role in several landmark political movements, including the 1962 Education Movement, the Six-Point Movement of 1966, and the historic Mass Uprising of 1969. These movements fundamentally altered the political landscape of Pakistan and strengthened Bengali demands for greater autonomy, eventually leading to the struggle for an independent Bangladesh.

During the 1971 Liberation War, Abdur Razzaq served as one of the sector commanders of the Mujib Bahini, leading one of its four sectors. The Mujib Bahini, composed primarily of politically committed young activists, worked alongside other freedom fighters in support of Bangladesh’s war of independence.

His political influence continued long after independence. He was first elected to Pakistan’s National Assembly in the landmark 1970 general election. Following Bangladesh’s independence, he was elected to the Jatiya Sangsad in 1973 and later returned to Parliament after the elections of 1991, 1996 and 2009, reflecting his enduring political relevance across different eras of the country’s democratic development.

Within the Awami League, Abdur Razzaq held several senior positions and served as the party’s General Secretary in 1979 and again in 1981. Throughout his political life, he endured imprisonment on multiple occasions because of his political activities and remained steadfast in opposing military rule and authoritarian governments. He consistently stood at the forefront of movements demanding the restoration and protection of democratic governance.

A lifelong advocate of secularism, Razzaq devoted himself to resisting communalism, religious extremism and reactionary politics. He remained committed to the vision of building a secular, inclusive Bangladesh rooted in the ideals that inspired the Liberation War.

He also became one of the leading voices demanding justice for collaborators of the Pakistani occupation forces and those accused of committing atrocities during the 1971 Liberation War. As a member of the National Coordination Committee for Realising the Spirit of the Liberation War and Eliminating the Killers and Collaborators of 1971, he actively supported public campaigns seeking accountability for alleged war crimes.

Abdur Razzaq passed away on 23 December 2011, leaving behind a political legacy closely intertwined with Bangladesh’s struggle for independence, democracy and secular values. More than a decade after his death, he continues to be remembered as a principled organiser, an influential strategist and a committed public servant whose contributions helped shape the nation’s political foundations.

On his birth anniversary, admirers, political colleagues and citizens alike pay tribute to a leader whose lifelong dedication to democracy, national sovereignty and the ideals of the Liberation War remains an enduring chapter in Bangladesh’s history.
