Dr. Md. Sakhawat Hossain has been promoted to the position of Executive Director (Research) at Bangladesh Bank, marking a significant milestone in a long and distinguished career spanning more than three decades in the country’s central banking system.
The promotion was formally approved on Wednesday, elevating him from his previous role as Director of the Research Department. In his new capacity, Dr. Hossain is expected to oversee key research functions that support monetary policy formulation, macroeconomic analysis, and evidence-based decision-making within the central bank.
Dr. Hossain joined Bangladesh Bank in 1994 as an Assistant Director, beginning a professional journey that has since extended over 32 years. Throughout his career, he has served in several critical divisions, including the Research Department, the Policy Analysis Unit, and the Chief Economist’s Unit. His work has consistently focused on strengthening economic research capacity and improving policy analytics within the institution.
Between June 2019 and February 2024, he served as a faculty member at the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy, where he contributed to the development of professional training programmes for central bank officials. His academic and training contributions have been widely regarded as instrumental in building analytical skills among mid-level and senior banking professionals.
Dr. Hossain’s academic background is in economics. He completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from Jahangirnagar University. He later earned a PhD in Economics, with his doctoral research focusing on “Import–Export Demand Functions and the Balance of Payments Stability in Bangladesh.” His scholarly work has been published in several national and international academic journals, reflecting his continued engagement with applied economic research.
As part of his professional assignments, he has also represented the central bank in various international engagements, visiting countries such as Singapore, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. These visits have contributed to knowledge exchange and capacity building in central banking practices.

Born in the village of Silimpur under Kalihati Upazila in Tangail district, Dr. Hossain comes from a Muslim family. His father was Ahsan Ullah and his mother was Shuria Begum.
In his personal life, he is married. His wife, Hosne Ara Mostafa, previously worked at Basic Bank and retired voluntarily in 2022 from the position of Executive Manager. The couple has two sons and one daughter.
