Several parts of Bangladesh may see light to moderate rain or thundershowers over the next four days, with temporary gusty winds possible in some areas. The weather conditions could also bring a slight fall in daytime temperatures in parts of the country.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued the forecast in its 120-hour outlook, effective from 6pm on Saturday (3 October).
According to the department, the extended axis of the monsoon trough runs from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar through West Bengal and the southern parts of Bangladesh towards Assam. The monsoon is currently less active over Bangladesh, while its condition over the North Bay of Bengal remains weak to moderate.
Under this weather pattern, rainfall is expected to remain scattered, with conditions varying between regions rather than affecting the entire country at the same time.
Until 6pm on Sunday, isolated areas of Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds in some places. Elsewhere, the weather is likely to remain mainly dry. Both daytime and night-time temperatures may fall slightly across the country.
On Monday, rain or thundershowers may occur at one or two places in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. The weather in other parts of the country is expected to remain mainly dry, while temperatures may remain almost unchanged.
The possibility of isolated showers will continue on Tuesday. One or two places in Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may receive rain or thundershowers. Daytime temperatures could fall slightly.
By Wednesday, the chance of rain is expected to cover a wider range of divisions. Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet may experience rain or thundershowers at one or two places. Both daytime and night-time temperatures may decrease slightly.
The forecast does not indicate continuous rainfall across the country. Instead, showers are expected to be localised, meaning some areas may receive rain while nearby locations remain dry. Temporary gusty winds may accompany thunderstorms in some places.
The Meteorological Department has also highlighted a possible seasonal shift in its extended five-day outlook. It said the south-west monsoon could withdraw from Bangladesh.
The possible withdrawal of the monsoon suggests that the country is approaching a transition in its seasonal weather pattern. However, until the monsoon retreats, scattered rain and thundershowers may continue in different parts of the country.
People in areas covered by the thunderstorm forecast may therefore need to remain alert to short-lived changes in weather, particularly when gusty winds and thunderstorms develop. Local conditions can change quickly, even when rainfall is not expected across an entire division.
