A 46-year-old schoolteacher was killed after an unidentified vehicle struck his motorcycle in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali on Wednesday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Shafiqul Azim, also known as Sumon. He was an assistant teacher at Uttar Kutubpur Government Primary School in Begumganj. He was the son of Abul Khayer, a teacher, and lived in the Ghātla area of Ward No. 1 in Kadipur Union.
The accident occurred at around 4.15pm on the Chaumuhani-Maijdee regional highway, in front of Haji Safi Manzil near Zainal Abedin School and College.
According to information available after the incident, Shafiqul was travelling by motorcycle from the Chourasta area of Chaumuhani Municipality towards Maijdee, the district headquarters. When he reached the area near the educational institution, an unidentified vehicle struck his motorcycle.
The impact threw him from the motorcycle and left him critically injured on the road. Local residents rushed to the scene and rescued him before taking him to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital examined him after his arrival but declared him dead.
The vehicle involved in the collision could not immediately be identified. Details about its type, registration number and the circumstances in which the crash occurred were not immediately available.
The accident took place on a regional highway used by vehicles travelling between Chaumuhani and Maijdee. Police are expected to examine the scene and gather information from people who may have witnessed the collision as part of the initial inquiry.
Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shamsuzzaman said he had received information about the accident and that police were being sent to the scene. He said further details would become clear after officers inspected the location.
Police will also seek to establish how the unidentified vehicle collided with the motorcycle and whether any witnesses can provide information that could help identify the vehicle or its driver.
News of the teacher’s death has caused grief among his family members, colleagues and people in his local community. His death came after what was described as a routine journey from the Chaumuhani area towards Maijdee.
At this stage, police have not disclosed whether the vehicle involved has been traced or whether anyone has been detained in connection with the incident. The investigation is expected to focus first on identifying the vehicle and establishing the sequence of events leading to the fatal collision.
