Seven More Fatalities Reported in Bangladesh as Measles Toll Escalates

Health authorities in Bangladesh have confirmed seven additional deaths attributed to measles-like symptoms over the past 24 hours, underscoring the ongoing pressure on the nation’s public health infrastructure. During the same period, a further 1,180 individuals presented with clinical symptoms or confirmed cases of the highly contagious viral infection.

According to the latest epidemiological update released on Sunday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the cumulative death toll from measles and related symptoms has reached 1,162 since monitoring intensified on 15 March. Laboratory-confirmed measles accounts for 104 of these fatalities, while 1,058 deaths have been classified as suspected cases stemming from measles-like symptoms.

Since mid-March, surveillance data indicates that 205,028 individuals across the country have been identified with suspected measles symptoms. Detailed diagnostic testing has confirmed active measles infections in 22,421 of these presenting patients.

Hospital resources have experienced significant strain throughout this outbreak period. The DGHS reports that 182,047 patients displaying measles-like symptoms have been admitted to healthcare facilities nationwide since 15 March. Medical staff have successfully treated and discharged 174,469 of these individuals, whilst thousands continue to receive inpatient care or targeted outpatient support.

Measles remains one of the world’s most severe airborne viral diseases, predominantly affecting young children who have not received complete immunization. Transmitted via respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, the virus severely compromises the immune system and can lead to severe complications, including fatal pneumonia, encephalitis, and severe dehydration. Public health experts emphasize that high coverage with the measles-containing vaccine (MCV) is the primary line of defence in halting community transmission and preventing epidemic surges.
