Bangladesh midfielder Shamit Som has reportedly emerged as a potential new signing for New York Cosmos, the club best remembered in Bangladesh for being the final team of Brazilian football icon Pelé’s illustrious playing career.
Som spent the past three seasons with Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League before leaving the club in January. He has since been without a club, and reports now suggest that he could continue his career in the United States with New York Cosmos. Neither Som nor the club, however, has officially confirmed that negotiations or a transfer are taking place.
New York Cosmos currently compete in the third tier of the United States football structure, but the club has a history that extends far beyond its present status. During the 1970s, Cosmos became one of the most recognisable clubs in world football after attracting several global stars.
Pelé joined the club in 1975 and spent the final period of his playing career there before retiring in 1977. German football great Franz Beckenbauer also played for Cosmos during the same era. Their presence helped establish the club as a major name in international football and gave it a lasting place in the sport’s history.
For Som, a move to Cosmos would represent another significant stage in an unusual international career. The Canada-born midfielder, who is of Bangladeshi heritage, previously represented Canada in two friendly internationals. After obtaining Bangladeshi citizenship last year, he opted to represent Bangladesh at international level.
Som made his Bangladesh debut in June 2025 during the third round of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. He quickly became part of the national team’s midfield options and later opened his international scoring account.
His first goal for Bangladesh came around four months after his debut, in a qualifying match against Hong Kong. Bangladesh eventually lost the contest 4–3, but Som’s goal marked an important personal milestone as he began establishing himself in the national side.
His three-year spell with Cavalry FC also provided valuable experience in competitive North American football. The club confirmed his departure ahead of the 2026 season after he had spent three seasons with the Canadian side.
A move to New York Cosmos would therefore give Som an opportunity to remain within the North American football system while joining a club with a remarkable historical connection to Pelé and Beckenbauer. It could also provide the Bangladesh international with a fresh platform as he looks to continue developing his club career.
For now, however, the proposed move remains speculation. With neither party having formally confirmed the transfer, Som’s next destination is yet to be determined. If the reported move does materialise, his arrival would give New York Cosmos a new connection with Bangladeshi football and add another chapter to the club’s long and distinguished history.
