Police in Comilla’s Muradnagar Upazila have arrested six activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Chhatra League and its associate bodies while they were allegedly preparing to hold an unauthorised political procession and public showdown. The security operation unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, 25 August, in the Alirchar precinct under Muradnagar Sadar Union. Following the arrests, law enforcement authorities formally lodged a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, naming 22 individuals alongside 15 to 20 unidentified suspects.
The crackdown commenced after local intelligence alerted law enforcement to an unsanctioned assembly of activists belonging to the Bangladesh Awami League and its student wing. A tactical police team, led by Sub-Inspector Sumon Talukder, executed a targeted raid on the grounds of Chan Miah Molla Degree College in Alirchar village, where the group had gathered to organise a political demonstration. Security personnel surrounded the premises and intercepted six individuals, while several other participants managed to escape into adjacent areas.
Those taken into custody have been identified as Md Jahidul Islam, 21, son of Md Sohel from Machimpur village in Titas Upazila; Md Ibrahim, 20, son of Julhas Miah, and Nuruzzaman, 21, son of Barek Miah, both hailing from Darimachimpur village in Titas; Md Sakib, 19, son of Ali Hossain from Gangatia village in Muradnagar’s Jahapur Union; Mehedi Momin Shahed, 22, son of Dulal Miah from Ballabhdi village; and Md Saiful, 18, son of Mojibur Rahman from Chhaifullakandi village.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Muradnagar Police Station, Mohammad Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, confirmed that statutory charges were registered against the detainees under stringent anti-terrorism legislation. The six accused were produced before a Comilla magistrate court on Wednesday afternoon, where judicial proceedings ordered them remanded to jail pending trial.
OC Chowdhury underscored that police maintain intense surveillance across the upazila to pre-empt unlawful gatherings, unlicensed political rallies, and potential public order disturbances. He added that proactive security sweeps and intelligence-driven operations would persist across the sub-district to safeguard local residents.
These arrests reflect heightened administrative vigilance across Comilla district. In the wake of recent political shifts, law enforcement agencies have tightened security protocols to curb unsanctioned political mobilization and prevent potential destabilisation in grassroots communities.
