The cassette and CD era may have ended long ago, but the appeal of a complete music album has not disappeared from Bangladesh’s music scene. In today’s digital environment, artists generally release individual tracks through YouTube and various audio platforms, making new music available to listeners without the need for a physical album.
Yet several Bangladeshi musicians are now returning to the solo-album format, bringing a sense of nostalgia from an earlier period of music consumption into the digital age. At the same time, a series of solo concerts is giving established performers an opportunity to present their work directly before live audiences.
Ferdous Ara prepares new modern-song album
Nazrul Sangeet exponent Ferdous Ara is preparing a new album of modern Bengali songs after more than three decades. Provisionally titled Prem, the album will contain 10 tracks, with work on several songs already completed.
The project is being planned as more than an audio release. Music videos for each track are also expected to be produced and released individually. The songs will also be made available in audio format, allowing listeners to access the project through digital platforms.
For an artist whose career has been strongly associated with Nazrul Sangeet, the new project represents a return to modern songs after a considerable gap.
Kazi Shuvo returns after 10 years
Singer Kazi Shuvo is also returning with a new solo album after a decade. His last two solo albums, Mayar Agun and Daga, were released in 2016.
His new album, Keu Bujhlo Na, is scheduled for release on 28 September under the banner of Dhruba Music Station. The album features nine songs, including a duet performed by Kazi Shuvo and Badhan Sarker Puja.
Composer and singer Tarun Munshi is making a similar return after 10 years. His upcoming album, Naseeb, will feature seven songs covering themes such as love, separation and nature, as well as human life, mysticism and social reflections.
Recording for all the tracks has recently been completed, and the album will also be released through Dhruba Music Station.
Lutfur Hasan brings his eighth album
Singer-songwriter Lutfur Hasan, known for the popular song Ghuri Tumi Kar Akashe Oro, is also preparing a new solo album. His previous solo album was released around a decade ago.
The title of the new project has yet to be finalised. It will contain eight songs, all written and composed by Hasan himself. The album will be his eighth solo release, making it a significant addition to his solo discography.
Shaan Sayek works on five-track project
Composer and singer Shaan Sayek is working on a new five-song solo album. The songs have been written by Lutfur Hasan, Mahmud Murad, Walid Hasan and Shanto Pathik.
The title has not yet been finalised, but production on the project has already begun.
Joy Shahriar releases Boka
Singer Joy Shahriar has returned to the solo-album format with Boka, his fifth studio album. The eight-track project marks his first solo album in six years.
The first song from the album, Tomake Bhulte Shomoy Lagbe, was released last year. Three songs have been released so far, with the remaining tracks scheduled to be unveiled gradually.
The staggered release of individual songs reflects the way music is now commonly consumed online, while still allowing the artist to maintain the identity of a larger album project.
Rafa to hold first solo concert
The renewed activity is not limited to recorded music. Several artists are also preparing solo concerts.
Raief Al Hasan, popularly known as Rafa, is set to appear in his first solo concert. He has been involved with singing, guitar and drums for more than two decades and has performed with several bands. He is particularly known for his association with Aurthohin and Cryptic Fate.
A few years ago, he formed his own band, AvoidRafa. The band’s first solo concert, titled Eto Boka Keno Tumi, will take place on 2 October at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka.
Alongside his musical performance, Rafa will share experiences from different stages of his career with the audience. Aurthohin will perform as the guest band.
Bappa Majumder announces Moonlit Melodies
Although Bappa Majumder regularly performs at concerts with bands, his solo musical evenings have been relatively occasional. His first solo concert was held in 2022.
In 2024, he marked three decades in music with a solo concert titled Bappa Majumder Odyssey at the Krishibid Institution auditorium. Last year, he also performed at a solo event at the Yamaha Music Lounge in Tejgaon.
After a year’s gap, Bappa is scheduled to return to the stage on 9 October at the Krishibid Institution auditorium. Titled Moonlit Melodies, the concert will feature a selection of his popular songs.
The recent concert calendar has already included solo performances by other musicians. Miftah performed at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on 25 September, while Nirjhar Chowdhury held a solo concert at Alliance Française de Dhaka in Dhanmondi on 26 September.
The latest developments show that, despite the dominance of digital platforms and single-track releases, the album format continues to hold a place in Bangladesh’s music culture. For some artists, a full-length project offers a way to present several songs as part of a broader artistic body of work. For audiences, solo concerts provide a different experience altogether—the chance to hear familiar songs performed live and connect directly with the musicians behind them.
As established artists return with new albums and take their music to the stage, Bangladesh’s music scene is seeing the older tradition of album-making coexist with the realities of digital-era listening.
