A 26-year-old man accused of killing his father was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday while allegedly attempting to leave Bangladesh for Oman, police said.
The accused, Borhan Uddin, is a resident of Kokdandi village in Kalipur union of Banshkhali upazila in Chattogram. Police allege that he attacked his 55-year-old father, Mohammad Shahjahan, with a piece of wood during a family dispute on Monday night. Shahjahan sustained serious injuries and was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police and local sources, the dispute began at around 10pm on Monday when Shahjahan was involved in an argument with his wife, Asma Begum, and daughter, Ruby Akter, over a family matter. Borhan, who had recently returned from abroad, was present during the altercation.
At one stage, the disagreement reportedly escalated. Police allege that Borhan struck his father on the neck with a wooden log. Shahjahan fell seriously injured following the assault and was rushed to hospital for treatment. Despite medical intervention, his condition deteriorated and he died the following day.
Following Shahjahan’s death, the incident was treated as a suspected murder and a case was filed with Banshkhali Police Station. The victim’s sister, Lucky Akter, lodged the complaint. Borhan and his sister Ruby Akter were named as accused in the case.
After the case was filed, Borhan allegedly went into hiding. Police began efforts to establish his whereabouts and increased surveillance as they investigated the circumstances surrounding the death. Investigators subsequently learned that he was preparing to leave the country.
Police said Borhan travelled to Dhaka and reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday with the intention of flying to Oman. Officers intercepted and arrested him at the airport before he could leave the country.
Sudhangshu Shekhar Haldar, an investigation officer at Banshkhali Police Station, said Borhan was wanted in connection with the case over his father’s death and had allegedly been attempting to flee to Oman. He confirmed that the suspect was arrested at the airport.
Police are also conducting efforts to locate and arrest Ruby Akter, who was named as the second accused in the case.
Investigators are expected to question Borhan about the events leading up to the assault, the circumstances surrounding his father’s death and whether anyone else was involved. His alleged attempt to leave the country shortly after the case was filed is also likely to form part of the investigation.
The incident has caused concern locally because the alleged violence occurred within the family and resulted in the death of a parent. However, the precise circumstances of the confrontation, the roles of the accused and the legal responsibility of those involved will be determined through the investigation and subsequent judicial proceedings.
Police said Borhan would be brought before the appropriate legal authorities as the case proceeds. The investigation will seek to establish a complete account of the incident and determine how the dispute escalated into a fatal assault.
