Son Stabs Father to Death in Rangpur Following Domestic Dispute

Tragedy struck Masterpara in the Pirgacha upazila of Rangpur late on Friday evening, after an escalating domestic quarrel ended with a father being stabbed to death, allegedly by his own son.

The victim, identified as 55-year-old Mahabur Rahman, suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest during an argument at his home in the Char Tambulpur union. Despite prompt efforts by family members and neighbours to rush him to medical care, doctors at Rangpur Medical College Hospital pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Local sources and police reports indicate that the incident stemmed from lingering household tensions surrounding the suspect, 22-year-old Hasanur Rahman. Hasanur, who married a young woman from Laksam village in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila around three months ago, had been facing criticism for his ongoing unemployment. The situation deteriorated when his wife, frustrated by their financial instability, returned to her paternal home.

Hasanur’s strained relation with his in-laws soon spilled into his own home. He began refusing meals in protest, heightening the emotional strain within the household. On Friday morning, his mother-in-law arrived with several relatives to discuss the matrimonial impasse. Hasanur refused to host or offer hospitality to the visiting guests, sparking an argument that simmered throughout the day.

Events reached a critical point around 9:00 pm when Mahabur intervened, instructing his son to sit down for a meal with his mother-in-law. Hasanur’s adamant refusal triggered a heated confrontation, leading Mahabur to strike his son across the face in an attempt to discipline him. Outraged by the physical reprimand, Hasanur reportedly fetched a sharp knife from inside the house and plunged it into his father’s chest.

Mahabur collapsed to the floor with severe chest trauma. Neighbours rallied to transport him to the regional referral hospital, but heavy internal bleeding proved fatal before treatment could be administered.

Selim Malik, Officer-in-Charge of Pirgacha Police Station, stated that law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt to arrest Hasanur, who fled the scene immediately after the attack. Police have sent the body for an autopsy and are currently preparing a formal criminal case to determine whether underlying grievances further fueled the fatal assault.
