Sullivan Adds Another Landmark to Rapid Rise

Bangladeshi-born American midfielder Kavan Sullivan has added another notable achievement to an already remarkable start to his professional career, becoming the youngest player in Major League Soccer (MLS) history to win the Player of the Month award.

Sullivan, aged 17 years and two days, recently made his debut for the United States senior national team. He has now followed that milestone with a record-breaking individual honour after an outstanding September for Philadelphia Union.

The teenager scored four goals and provided five assists for Philadelphia Union during the month, contributing directly to nine goals. That was the highest combined total of goals and assists by any player in MLS during September, underlining the scale of his contribution to the side’s attacking play.

The award also saw Sullivan break a record that had stood since 2020. In August that year, Orlando City striker Daryl Dike became the youngest MLS Player of the Month when he received the honour at the age of 20 years and 98 days. Sullivan has now surpassed that mark while still several years younger than Dike was when he set the previous record.

Sullivan’s rapid rise is not entirely unexpected. Two years ago, he began his MLS career as the youngest player to appear in the competition. His early introduction to senior football came at an age when most players are still progressing through youth-level systems, making his subsequent development particularly notable.

His performances in September provided another clear indication of his growing influence. Four goals showed his ability to finish attacks, while five assists highlighted his contribution to creating opportunities for his teammates. The combination gave him nine direct goal contributions in the month.

Sullivan also has a strong connection with Bangladesh through his family. His older twin brothers, Ronan Sullivan and Declan Sullivan, represented Bangladesh at under-20 level and were part of the side that won the SAFF Championship. Kavan, the youngest of the four brothers, has taken a different international path, representing the United States.

That decision has now led to another major milestone. His recent senior international debut means Sullivan has already represented the United States at the highest level while still only 17 years old. His club form has continued to develop alongside his international career, giving him experience in two demanding environments at a very young age.

For Philadelphia Union, his September output was significant not only because of the goals he scored but also because of the chances he created. The five assists demonstrate the creative side of his game, while his four goals show that he can also provide a direct threat in the final third.

The latest award therefore adds another chapter to Sullivan’s increasingly distinctive MLS story. He has gone from becoming the league’s youngest player to becoming its youngest Player of the Month, while also earning a senior international debut for the United States.

With family links to Bangladesh and an emerging international career with the United States, Sullivan’s progress has attracted attention beyond American football. His latest record is another significant marker in a career that remains at a very early stage, but which has already produced several historic milestones.
