Police have detained a 37-year-old man in the Nandail Municipality of Mymensingh following the horrific sexual assault of a five-year-old girl. The suspect, identified as Mostafa, the son of Abdur Rashid and a resident of the municipality, was apprehended late on Sunday night, 12 July, at approximately 10:45 pm during a targeted police raid.
According to local residents and law enforcement officials, the harrowing incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. The victim’s mother, who works as a domestic helper to support her family, had briefly left the child at home while she attended to her duties at a neighbouring household. Finding the young girl unattended, Mostafa allegedly used deceptive tactics to lure her away from the residence. He promised her a boat ride in the wetland adjacent to the house, drawing her to a secluded area where he subjected her to a violent assault.
The ordeal came to light when the mother returned from work and grew anxious upon finding the house empty. Following a frantic search of the neighbourhood, she discovered her daughter walking back towards the house, severely injured and bleeding profusely. Distressed and in tears, the five-year-old broke down under her mother’s questioning and recounted the brutal assault by Mostafa.
Initially, the vulnerable family attempted to conceal the incident, driven by the intense social stigma and fear of public humiliation that frequently surrounds such assaults in rural communities. However, by Sunday evening, the child’s physical condition deteriorated sharply. As the continuous haemorrhaging showed no signs of stopping, the family realised the gravity of the medical emergency and rushed her to the emergency department of the Nandail Upazila Health Complex.
Dr Akramullah, the duty physician at the health complex, examined the child and confirmed she had suffered extensive and severe sexual trauma. Although medical staff administered immediate primary care, they were unable to halt the bleeding completely. Given her critical condition and the urgent need for specialised clinical intervention, she was transferred to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) for advanced treatment, where she remains under close medical supervision.
As news of the horrific crime spread through the municipality, local residents expressed intense anger and outrage, demanding immediate justice. Law enforcement acted swiftly to contain the escalating tension.
Sub-Inspector Samraj Miah of the Nandail Police Station confirmed the arrest, stating that a specialised police team launched an immediate operation upon receiving the report. Officers conducted coordinated raids across various parts of the municipality, successfully tracking down and detaining Mostafa.
Police authorities have confirmed that the victim’s family is currently preparing to file a formal case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. A thorough investigation has been initiated to ascertain whether any other factors contributed to the crime. The suspect will be produced before the court following standard legal procedures, with police officials promising a rigorous prosecution to ensure the maximum legal penalty for the perpetrator.
