A man accused of involvement in the murder of Fakhrul Islam, 32, who was shot dead inside a brick kiln office in Rupsha, Khulna, has been arrested in Chattogram. The Special Response Battalion (SRB) said Abdur Rahman, 30, was arrested as one of the key suspects in the case during a joint operation by two of its units.
The operation was conducted in the Hathazari area of Chattogram at around 1.30am on Tuesday, 13 October, by SRB-6 Khulna and SRB-7 Chattogram, according to SRB-6. The arrest took place during the night following Monday, 12 October.
Abdur Rahman is the son of Abdur Rouf Sheikh and hails from the village of Ilaipur in Rupsha upazila, Khulna. Following his arrest, he was handed over to Hathazari Police Station, the agency said.
According to the first information report (FIR), the incident took place on the night of 12 August at the office of Messrs Rupsha Bricks in Rupsha upazila. Fakhrul Islam was inside the office when a group of assailants entered and opened fire at him indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
Fakhrul sustained gunshot wounds during the attack. Local residents subsequently rescued him and took him to Rupsha Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared him dead.
Following the incident, Fakhrul’s brother, Farhad Hossain, filed a murder case with Rupsha Police Station, initially naming unidentified individuals as the accused. Investigators have since been working to identify those responsible for the killing and bring them to justice.
SRB-6’s media cell confirmed that Abdur Rahman had been arrested as one of the key accused in the case. However, the agency did not disclose further details about his alleged role in the murder.
The battalion said its operations were continuing to apprehend suspects in criminal cases, convicted offenders and individuals wanted under arrest warrants. It is also conducting operations against armed criminals, drug traffickers and people suspected of involvement in serious offences, including murder and rape.
SRB-6 said efforts were under way to arrest the remaining suspects in the killing of Fakhrul Islam. Further investigation is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the murder and identify others allegedly involved in the attack.
