Police have detained a 35-year-old madrasa teacher in Jashore’s Chaugachha after he was allegedly involved in the sexual abuse of a seven-year-old madrasa student. The suspect, identified as Hafiz Nazmul Islam, was reportedly apprehended by local residents before being handed over to police.
The incident took place at around 8pm on Friday, 7 August, beneath a bridge over the Kopotakkho River in the Narayanpur area of Chaugachha.
Nazmul Islam is the son of Abu Sayeed Sheikh of Kulbaria village in Dumuria upazila of Khulna. He teaches at Hafizia Baitul Mamun Madrasa in Mollapara, Jashore city.
According to police and the child’s family, the teacher had taken the seven-year-old boy to Narayanpur earlier that morning, saying they would visit his village home. The child’s uncle, Emon Hossain, alleged that later in the evening Nazmul took the child beneath the Kopotakkho bridge on the pretext of buying chotpoti, a popular local snack.
The family alleges that the teacher subsequently intimidated the child and sexually abused him at the location. The allegation came to the attention of several local people, who reportedly intervened and detained the accused.
Tensions then escalated, with members of the crowd assaulting Nazmul before police arrived. Officers took him into custody and later brought him to the police station.
The child’s family has also alleged that this may not have been an isolated incident. Family members said the child had previously described inappropriate behaviour by the teacher. Those earlier allegations, however, require separate verification through a proper investigation.
Chaugachha police station officer-in-charge Mamunur Rashid confirmed the detention. He said police had taken the teacher into custody following the complaint and that a case had been filed. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the allegation, with further legal action expected to be determined on the basis of evidence gathered during the investigation.
Cases involving alleged sexual abuse of children require particular care because the safety, dignity and privacy of the child must be protected throughout the legal process. Authorities are also expected to handle the child in a manner that avoids further trauma and protects the child’s identity.
At the same time, the allegation remains subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. The accused should not be treated as guilty before the evidence has been examined and the case has been determined through the appropriate legal process.
The reported assault on the suspect by local residents is also a serious concern. Regardless of the nature of an allegation, taking the law into one’s own hands can undermine due process and create further risks. Complaints involving children should instead be reported immediately to the police or other responsible authorities so that evidence can be preserved and the child can receive appropriate protection.
The incident has caused concern among the child’s family and the local community. It also highlights the responsibility of educational and religious institutions to maintain safe environments for children. Teachers, guardians and institutional authorities need to remain alert to signs of fear, distress or unusual behaviour and should take any complaint made by a child seriously.
Police said all aspects of the case would be examined during the investigation and that subsequent legal measures would be taken on the basis of the evidence.
