Three Chhatra League Leaders Arrested After Narsingdi March

Police have arrested three leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League in Narsingdi city following a sudden procession by a group of the organisation’s activists on Thursday.

The arrests were made separately on Friday night after police reviewed CCTV footage from different parts of the city and analysed video recordings of the procession that later circulated on social media and in various media outlets.

The arrested men have been identified as Tamzid Ahmed Joy, 20, organising secretary of the Narsingdi city unit of Chhatra League; Syed Rabbi, also known as Rabbi Mia, 27, vice-president of Ward No. 6 of the city unit; and Bijoy Saha, 26, religious and relief affairs secretary of the city unit.

According to police, Joy is a resident of West Kandapara in Narsingdi city. Rabbi lives as a tenant at the house of Hafiz Mia in the Kumilla Colony area of Satirpara, while Saha is a resident of East Brahmandi.

Police said a group of Chhatra League activists suddenly brought out a procession at an undisclosed location in Narsingdi city on Thursday. After receiving information about the gathering, police moved towards the area. The processionists, however, left the scene quickly before officers could reach them.

Videos of the procession subsequently appeared on social media and were also circulated by different media organisations. Police then began efforts to establish the identities of those who had taken part.

Investigators collected CCTV footage from cameras installed at various points across the city and examined the recordings to trace the movements of suspected participants. Based on that analysis, police identified several individuals believed to have been involved in the procession.

Separate police operations were subsequently conducted in different parts of the city on Friday night, resulting in the arrest of the three Chhatra League leaders.

A R M Al-Mamun, officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station, said police had been gathering information and examining CCTV footage in connection with the procession and allegations that the incident could affect the law-and-order situation.

He said the three men were arrested over their alleged involvement in the procession and that legal proceedings against them were being initiated.

Police are also working to identify other people who participated in the procession. Officers said surveillance had been strengthened across Narsingdi city to help maintain public order and prevent similar incidents.

The Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, has faced restrictions on its activities. Against that backdrop, any public activity involving the organisation can draw heightened attention from law-enforcement agencies, particularly where police believe an incident may have implications for public order.

Authorities said operations would continue to identify other alleged participants and bring those found responsible under the law.

Police did not immediately disclose which specific laws would be invoked or what charges would ultimately be brought against the three arrested men. The details of the cases were also not available at the time of reporting.
