A major anti-narcotics operation conducted by the Bangladesh Coast Guard in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, has resulted in the seizure of 80,000 yaba tablets and the arrest of one alleged drug trafficker. Authorities estimate the street value of the confiscated consignment at approximately Tk 40 million (around four crore taka).
According to a press release signed by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sojun, the operation was carried out at around 2:00 am on Sunday night in the Keruntoli area of Teknaf upazila. Acting on confidential intelligence, a Coast Guard team intercepted a private car suspected of being used for drug transportation.
During a thorough search of the vehicle, personnel discovered a large quantity of yaba tablets concealed using specialised hiding techniques. The drugs were carefully packed and hidden within the vehicle’s interior compartments, indicating a planned attempt to evade detection.
One individual, believed to be directly involved in the trafficking operation, was arrested at the scene. The private car used to transport the narcotics was also seized by the authorities. The arrested suspect, along with the confiscated yaba tablets and the vehicle, is being prepared for handover to the relevant legal authorities for further investigation and judicial proceedings.
Teknaf, which lies close to the Myanmar border, has long been identified as a key transit point for yaba smuggling into Bangladesh. The porous nature of the border has made it a persistent route for narcotics traffickers, who frequently employ evolving concealment tactics and transport methods to evade law enforcement detection. Despite regular crackdowns by security agencies, smuggling networks continue to operate through sophisticated cross-border supply chains.
The Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance in coastal and border regions in recent years. Intelligence-led operations, such as this latest seizure, are considered a critical component of efforts to curb the flow of illegal drugs into the country.
