Bangladesh in Firm Control at Mirpur

Bangladesh dominated the second Test against Ireland in Mirpur, ending the third day with a 367-run advantage after a disciplined bowling performance in the first innings and a strong start in the second. Ireland had posted 265 runs before Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by Taijul Islam, brought the visitors’ innings to a close.

The third day saw more than just cricket; a sudden earthquake tremor shook the stadium, causing temporary disruption. Yet the Bangladeshi side stayed focused, undeterred by the unusual interruption. Taijul, speaking at the day’s press conference, highlighted the team’s focus on process over immediate results, emphasising patience and gradual match-building as key.

Ireland tried to stabilise early on, with Lorcan Tucker scoring 75* to hold one end. But Taijul’s four-wicket haul, combined with support from pacers Khaled Ahmed and Ibadat Hossain, ensured Ireland could not sustain their resistance. Choosing not to enforce the follow-on, Bangladesh opted to bat again, allowing their bowlers time to recover.

Opener partnership between Mahmudullah Joy and Sadman Islam proved pivotal. Joy scored a well-made 60, while Sadman remained unbeaten on 69*, with Mominul Haque supporting. Bangladesh scored 156 in 37 overs, maintaining a run rate above four, signalling their intent to secure a commanding victory rather than settle for a draw.

Taijul also addressed his leadership of the spin department in Shakib Al Hasan’s absence, stressing that senior players’ responsibilities include mentoring younger teammates. With the fourth day likely to see Bangladesh extend the lead further, Ireland faces a monumental challenge against an aggressive batting line-up and potent spin attack. The Tigers are firmly on course for a comprehensive win.
