Theft Complaints Spark Political Tension in Mymensingh

A woman entrepreneur in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, was taken to a police station after a Facebook Live broadcast in which she criticised the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and expressed regret over her vote following a series of alleged thefts at her business premises.

Sathi Akter, owner of Sathi Beauty Parlour in the Square Masterbari area of Bhaluka upazila, voiced her frustration over repeated thefts affecting her businesses and nearby properties during the broadcast on Sunday afternoon. Her comments subsequently spread across social media, triggering tension among local BNP activists and residents. Police later intervened and took her to the station to prevent the situation from escalating.

According to local sources and police, Akter went live from a Facebook account named ‘Sathi Makeover’. She alleged that valuable items, including air-conditioning cables and electrical wiring, had recently been stolen from two of her showrooms, her home and several nearby shops.

The repeated incidents had caused her substantial financial losses, she said, leaving her distressed and uncertain about how to deal with the situation.

During the broadcast, Akter expressed her frustration by saying: “I have lost everything and feel as though I am going mad. Whom did I vote for to end up suffering like this?”

She also voiced dissatisfaction with the law and order situation and the security of business establishments. Referring to her voting decision, she expressed regret and criticised the BNP, linking her personal experience to wider concerns about security and the protection of property.

The video circulated widely on social media, prompting a reaction from local BNP activists and members of the party’s affiliated organisations. On Sunday evening, a group of activists went to Akter’s parlour to ask her about the remarks. The exchange led to a tense situation at the premises.

Concerned about the possibility of vandalism or other disorder, local residents alerted the police. Officers from Bhaluka Model Police Station arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. They subsequently took Akter from the parlour to the station.

Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam confirmed the incident, saying police had responded to reports of a possible attack at the business premises. Officers intervened to prevent the situation from deteriorating and took Akter to the station amid the tensions surrounding her Facebook Live broadcast.

The officer also alleged that Akter behaved aggressively towards the police after they arrived. He said she was being held at the station and was expected to be produced before a court shortly.

However, the police account did not specify the legal grounds for holding Akter. Nor did it provide details about any investigation into the alleged thefts, including whether suspects had been identified or arrests made.

The incident began with a business owner’s complaints about repeated losses and concerns over security, but escalated after her political comments provoked a local reaction. The reported thefts and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain separate issues that require clarification from the relevant authorities.

Further information will be needed to establish the progress of any investigation into the theft allegations and the legal steps taken in relation to Akter.
