Three Arrested After Armed Attack on Gazipur Railway Police Outpost

Police have arrested three people following an attack on the Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost in Gazipur, allegedly carried out to free two individuals detained with yaba tablets. The arrests were made on Thursday night (15 October) in a joint operation by Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s Sadar Metro Police Station and railway police. Two separate cases have been filed over the incident, in which two police personnel were injured.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Shuvo, 20, Sanowar Hossain Hridoy, 23, and Yasin, 26. Police launched an operation shortly after the attack and arrested the three men later that night.

Faruk Hossain, in-charge of the Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost, said two separate cases had been filed: one over the attack on the police facility and another concerning the detention of the two individuals with drugs.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ATSI) Nurul Islam, who was injured in the attack, filed both cases with Dhaka Railway Police Station.

Zainal Abedin, officer-in-charge of Dhaka Railway Police Station, confirmed the arrests. He said the two individuals detained with yaba, identified as Anich, 18, and Shimla Akter, 22, would also be shown as arrested in connection with the assault and drug cases before being sent to court.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s Sadar Metro Police Station has handed the two detainees over to railway police. They are expected to be produced before a court in Dhaka, according to the officer.

Anich is the son of Haresh Mia of Gafargaon in Mymensingh district. Shimla Akter is the daughter of Selim Mia, who lives in the Chaa-Bagan Bashtala area of Ward 29 under Gazipur Sadar Police Station.

According to police, railway officers detained Anich and Shimla with yaba tablets at Platform No. 2 of Joydebpur Railway Station at around 5.30pm on Thursday. The pair were subsequently taken to the railway police outpost for further legal proceedings.

After learning about their detention, a group of around 25 to 30 people allegedly arrived at the outpost carrying sharp weapons. They attacked the facility in an attempt to free the two detainees from police custody.

When police personnel tried to prevent them from entering and carrying out the alleged rescue attempt, the attackers reportedly assaulted the officers with sharp weapons. Nurul Islam and Constable Ashikur Rahman sustained injuries during the incident.

The injured officers were taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where they received treatment.

Following the attack, personnel from Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s Sadar Metro Police Station and railway police launched a joint operation, leading to the arrest of the three suspects later that night.

Police are pursuing further legal action in connection with both cases. The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances of the attack and determine the involvement of those arrested, as well as identify any other individuals who may have participated.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety of police personnel carrying out their duties at railway facilities. However, police have not provided further details on whether additional suspects have been identified. Investigations into the attack and the drug-related case are ongoing.
