Tragedy in Chittagong as Police Officer Dies Pursuing Snatcher

A police constable belonging to the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has lost his life after being struck by a bus while attempting to arrest a mugger in the city’s Ispahani Checkpost area.

The deceased officer, identified as Al Amin Sardar, breathed his last at approximately 04:00 BST on Monday, 5th October, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Officer Al Amin, whose ancestral home was in Madaripur district, was attached to the CMP’s Special Armed Force (SAF) branch based at the police lines and was on active duty when the accident occurred.

The tragedy unfolded in the early morning hours of Sunday, 4th October. Constable Al Amin was stationed at the Ispahani Checkpost on routine monitoring duties when an operational effort to apprehend a fleeing mugger commenced. As he moved into the roadway to intercept and detain the criminal, a passing passenger bus struck him with considerable force, causing severe injuries.

Fellow officers on the scene rushed the critically injured constable to CMCH. Given the grave nature of his physical trauma, attending doctors immediately placed him in the ICU. Despite nearly twenty-four hours of continuous medical intervention, his condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his demise early on Monday morning.

Confirming the incident, Assistant Commissioner (Media) of the CMP, Aminur Rashid, stated that the officer sustained fatal injuries while courageously attempting to make the arrest during his shift. CMP Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Shawkat Ali expressed deep condolences over the loss, while colleagues across the department gathered to mourn a fallen comrade who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The fatal crash highlights the inherent perils faced by frontline law enforcement personnel operating along major thoroughfares. Early morning shifts present heightened risks due to limited visibility, fast-moving traffic, and unpredictable encounters with fleeing suspects. Whilst specific details regarding the bus driver’s identity or subsequent legal proceedings remain unconfirmed, CMP officials indicated that formal procedures are underway to send the constable’s body to Madaripur for final rites.
