Tragedy in Jamalpur as Bus Kills Mother and Daughter-in-Law

A tranquil morning descended into utter devastation in northern Bangladesh after a speeding passenger bus ran over two women standing beside the road, killing them instantly. The fatal accident took place at roughly 6:00 am on Saturday, 10 October, in the Nilakhia Thakurpara neighbourhood of Bakshiganj Upazila, located within Jamalpur district.

The deceased have been identified as 65-year-old Ufeja Begum and her 35-year-old daughter-in-law, Farida Begum. Both victims were residents of Nilakhia Thakurpara village. The unexpected loss of two members from the same household has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving relatives overwhelmed with grief.

According to local reports, an inter-district passenger coach operated by Shanti Paribahan was heading towards Roumari Upazila in Kurigram district after departing from Dhaka. As the vehicle navigated the regional stretch passing through Nilakhia Thakurpara, it struck Ufeja and Farida, who were standing alongside the thoroughfare. The sheer impact of the collision left them with catastrophic injuries, and both women perished at the scene before medical aid could arrive. The exact reason why they were standing by the roadside at that early hour remains unclear.

Following urgent notifications from startled bystanders, officers from Bakshiganj Police Station arrived promptly to secure the area and recover the bodies. Law enforcement officers seized the offending Shanti Paribahan coach and arrested the vehicle’s helper, identified as Mohiuddin.

Makbul Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakshiganj Police Station, verified the police response, confirming that the bus had been impounded and the helper taken into custody. He added that formal legal proceedings were actively underway to determine accountability.

This tragedy once again highlights persistent concerns surrounding road safety along highways in rural Bangladesh. Long-haul drivers negotiating early morning routes through densely populated villages often face issues related to fatigue, excessive speed, and poor visibility. Determining whether mechanical failure, reckless driving, or adverse road conditions caused this specific crash will depend heavily on the ongoing police investigation. Crucially, enforcing speed limits, raising driver awareness in built-up areas, and installing proper pedestrian infrastructure remain essential steps to prevent similar fatal incidents in the future.
