A twenty-five-year-old technician lost his life on Tuesday morning following a severe compressor explosion during routine air conditioner servicing in the capital’s Nayapaltan area. The deceased, identified as Jiban Barman, was the son of Sachin Barman, hailing from Bhatpara Gopalpur village under Gaibandha Sadar upazila. He had been working as an air-conditioning mechanic at a local enterprise named MI Engineering Plus.
The fatal incident occurred around 10:30 am when Jiban was carrying out maintenance work on a unit inside the premises. According to his brother, Anik Barman, Jiban was attending to his daily duties when the air conditioner’s compressor abruptly exploded without warning. The sheer force of the blast inflicted critical, widespread injuries, leaving him severely bleeding on the workshop floor.
Alerted by the deafening sound, fellow colleagues rushed to his rescue and managed to extricate him from the immediate blast zone. They immediately transported him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Despite swift medical attention from attending physicians, Jiban succumbed to his injuries at approximately 12:15 pm, within two hours of the accident.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed the death and stated that the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for official procedures. He noted that the relevant police station was promptly informed to initiate a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the blast.
While compressor explosions during air conditioning repairs are often viewed as workplace accidents, servicing such systems carries inherent risks associated with high-pressure refrigerant gases, electrical wiring, and mechanical failure. Technicians working with pressurized units are required to adhere to rigorous safety protocols, including disconnecting power sources, monitoring internal pressure gauges, and utilizing protective equipment. Whether technical negligence or structural defects caused the sudden rupture remains unverified. Local authorities and investigative bodies are expected to examine the workshop to determine the exact cause of the explosion and evaluate safety compliance at the site.
