A 45-year-old woman was killed after being thrown from a battery-powered autorickshaw when a truck struck the vehicle on the Hajiganj-Ramganj road in Chandpur on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Rehana Akter Lucky, wife of Abdul Kader Bitu Majumder. She lived in the Randhunimura area of Ward 10 under Hajiganj municipality.
According to local residents, Rehana was travelling by a battery-powered autorickshaw to her husband’s home on Monday night. When the vehicle reached the Randhunimura area on the southern bank of the Dakatia River, a truck coming from the opposite direction collided with it.
The force of the impact caused Rehana to be thrown from the autorickshaw onto the road. She sustained serious injuries in the crash.
Local people rescued her and took her to a hospital in Hajiganj for treatment. Doctors provided initial medical care there but, considering the severity of her condition, advised that she be transferred to Cumilla for more advanced treatment.
Her family and others then began taking her towards Cumilla. However, she died on the way before she could receive further treatment.
The accident has left Rehana’s family and people in the surrounding area mourning. The incident also highlights the vulnerability of passengers travelling in smaller vehicles when they are involved in collisions with heavy vehicles such as trucks.
Hajiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Mannan said police had seized the truck involved in the accident and taken its driver into custody.
Legal action will be taken over the incident, the OC said.
Police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision as part of the legal process. The crash occurred on a road regularly used by local residents and other vehicles, making the incident a matter of concern for people in the area.
