A tragic road traffic collision in Gurudaspur, Natore, has resulted in the death of a 25-year-old motorcyclist after he was run over by a truck at a busy junction on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:00 noon at the Gopal’s Corner intersection along the Garishapara Road in the municipal area. According to police and local eyewitness accounts, the victim, identified as Shanto, son of Saidul Islam Hobu of Darikachikata village in Gurudaspur upazila, was travelling on a motorcycle with his friend Akash when the accident took place.
Shanto was reportedly engaged in an agent banking business in Kakshikata Bazaar. The two friends were heading towards Chachkoir Market when a speeding truck struck their motorcycle from behind. The vehicle, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-T-18-3983, was allegedly being driven recklessly at the time of the collision.
The impact threw the motorcycle off balance, and Shanto fell onto the road, where he was crushed beneath the wheels of the truck, dying instantly at the scene. His companion, Akash, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Following the accident, the truck driver, identified as Shaheen, was detained by police along with the vehicle. Tensions escalated at the scene, and an angry crowd vandalised the truck in protest against the incident.
Local traders, including a jute businessman named Md. Tarek from Chachkoir, claimed that the truck belongs to him but stated that it was being driven by a helper at the time. He also noted that efforts were underway to resolve the matter through discussions.
Residents of the area expressed concern over the frequent involvement of unqualified or helper-driven vehicles in serious road accidents, alleging that such practices have contributed significantly to unsafe road conditions in the region.
The Officer-in-Charge of Gurudaspur Police Station, Monjurul Alam, confirmed that legal action would be taken once a formal complaint is filed by the victim’s family. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is currently ongoing.
