Two more children have died in Bangladesh within the past 24 hours due to symptoms associated with measles, both from Sylhet, as health authorities continue to report a worrying rise in infections and suspected cases across the country.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services, the deaths occurred between Friday morning and Saturday morning. During the same 24-hour period, 961 children developed measles-like symptoms, while 108 cases were confirmed as measles infections. In total, 1,069 children were recorded as either infected or suspected of having the disease within this short timeframe alone.
Health officials have confirmed that the two most recent fatalities were reported from Sylhet, underscoring regional concentrations of severe cases. The development adds to growing concern among public health experts as the outbreak continues to spread across multiple districts.
Since 15 March, the situation has significantly escalated. Official data show that 56,572 children have exhibited measles-related symptoms over this period. Of them, 41,028 required hospital admission, while 36,645 have since recovered and been discharged. However, the burden on the healthcare system remains substantial, with thousands still affected or under observation.
The cumulative death toll linked to measles symptoms now stands at 379 children. In addition, 74 children have died following laboratory-confirmed measles infections. This brings the total number of deaths associated with measles and related symptoms to 453 since mid-March.
Health authorities have also confirmed 7,524 laboratory-verified measles cases during the same period, highlighting the scale of confirmed transmission alongside the larger number of suspected cases.
Public health specialists warn that the combination of high infection rates and delayed presentation at healthcare facilities may be contributing to the rising fatalities. Efforts are ongoing to strengthen vaccination coverage, improve early detection, and ensure timely treatment for affected children.
