Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the fatal stabbing of former voluntary wing political organiser Billal Hossain Talukder in Dhaka’s Ramna area, amid an ongoing investigation into several other suspects believed to be involved in the incident.
According to law enforcement sources, the arrested men have been identified as Al Amin and Riazul. They were detained on Monday night during separate operations carried out in Dhaka and Munshiganj. Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division Sheikh Jahidul Islam confirmed that Al Amin was apprehended from a location within the capital, while Riazul was arrested from Munshiganj district. Authorities added that efforts are continuing to identify and detain additional individuals linked to the attack.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:45pm on Monday in a narrow alley adjacent to the Anarkali Market in the Mouchaak area of Ramna. Billal Hossain Talukder, a former convenor of the Ramna police station unit of a volunteer political wing, was reportedly stabbed during an altercation. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition but was declared dead by doctors around 9:00pm.
The deceased, aged 45, resided in the Baganbari area of Malibagh. He was the son of Yousuf Talukder and had long been involved in local political activities. Police and eyewitness accounts suggest that the incident originated from a dispute involving Billal’s nephew, Mobarak Hossain, also known as Akash.
It has been alleged that Mobarak Hossain was being assaulted near the market by associates of a local political figure, Didarul Islam Babu. Upon learning of the altercation, Billal reportedly arrived at the scene in an attempt to mediate and defuse the situation. However, tensions escalated during the intervention, leading to a confrontation between Billal and Didarul Islam.
Eyewitnesses stated that the verbal dispute quickly intensified, after which Billal Hossain Talukder was stabbed. Locals subsequently rescued him and transported him to hospital, but medical staff were unable to save his life.
Following the incident, immediate organisational action was taken within the political structure associated with the individuals involved. Didarul Islam Babu was expelled from his position the same night, and the central committee dissolved the Ramna unit committee of the affiliated youth wing. The organisation also announced that both disciplinary and legal measures would be pursued against those responsible.
Law enforcement officials emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and that the broader circumstances of the killing remain under scrutiny.
