Two bodies were recovered from the Buriganga River in separate incidents on Tuesday (4 August), with one victim identified as a young man while the identity of the other remains unknown. The recoveries were made from two different areas of Keraniganj during the afternoon, prompting separate investigations by the river police.
According to the Naval Police, officers from the Basila Naval Police Outpost recovered a body from near the Washpur Jhauchar ferry terminal area under Keraniganj Model Police Station at around noon. The deceased was initially unidentified, but police later confirmed him as Hridoy, a resident of Basila Uttar Mora area.
Inspector Omar Ali, in-charge of the Basila Naval Police Outpost, said Hridoy was the son of Sirajul Islam and worked as a deliveryman for a courier service company. After recovering the body, police found a mobile phone SIM card in his pocket, which helped them contact his family members. Relatives later visited the morgue and identified the body as Hridoy’s.
Police said Hridoy had left home two days earlier for work but did not return. His family had reportedly searched for him at various locations after he went missing but failed to trace him. They were later informed by police and confirmed his identity after visiting the morgue.
In a separate incident on the same day, another body was recovered from the middle of the Buriganga River near Kandapara ferry terminal in Konda Union under South Keraniganj Police Station. The recovery was carried out by members of the Pagla Naval Police Outpost at around 4pm after local residents spotted the body floating in the river and alerted authorities.
Mohammad Malek Biswas, officer-in-charge of the Pagla Naval Police Outpost, said police reached the location after receiving information from locals and retrieved the body from the river. The victim’s identity could not be established immediately.
During the preliminary examination, police found several injury marks on the unidentified body. Officials said the victim’s right leg was found severed, while the left leg and right arm appeared to be broken. There were also signs of injuries in different parts of the body. Police said the victim was found without any clothing, though the circumstances surrounding the death have not yet been determined.
The recovered bodies were sent to the morgue of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in Dhaka for post-mortem examinations. Investigators said the autopsy reports would help establish the actual causes of death and provide further direction for the ongoing probes.
Police have started separate legal procedures over the two incidents. The Basila and Pagla Naval Police Outposts have filed separate cases with the relevant police stations. Authorities are continuing efforts to identify the unidentified victim and investigate whether the deaths resulted from accidents, criminal activity, or other circumstances.
The Buriganga River, one of the busiest waterways surrounding Dhaka, frequently witnesses incidents involving missing persons, drowning, and other river-related accidents. Police officials said regular monitoring and investigations are being conducted to address such incidents, while the latest cases remain under active investigation.
