Two Chhatra League activists were detained by local Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal members and residents in Chhatak, Sunamganj, over allegations that they were attempting to join a sudden political rally. They were later handed over to the police, who are taking legal steps in connection with the incident.
The incident occurred late on Sunday night in and around Manikganj Bazar, in Dakshin Khurma Union of Chhatak Upazila.
According to local sources, more than 100 activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations travelled from different parts of Sylhet and Sunamganj in a convoy of motorcycles. The group reportedly attempted to stage impromptu rallies at several locations across Chhatak. Those allegedly involved included members of the Chhatra League, Jubo League and Swechchhasebak League, alongside Awami League activists.
Local residents and Chhatra Dal members had reportedly taken precautionary measures after receiving information that the gatherings could cause public alarm and create instability in the area. The late-night mobilisation prompted concern over the potential impact on local security and public order.
As the procession passed through the Jatua Bokarbhanga area of the upazila, two men were detained after their movements were considered suspicious, according to local accounts. They were subsequently identified as Rumel Ahmed Rubel, 28, son of Abul Khayer of Beanibazar Upazila in Sylhet, and Sumon Ahmed, 26, son of Abbas Ali of Sabmangal village in Dirai Upazila, Sunamganj.
After receiving information about the incident, a police team arrived at the scene under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Shariful Islam. Officers took the two men into their custody from the local residents and transported them to Chhatak Police Station for further proceedings.
Chhatak Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain said legal proceedings were under way against the two men over allegations that they had participated in the sudden rally. He added that the process of filing a regular case was under way as part of the legal action.
The incident comes amid continuing political sensitivities surrounding public gatherings and activities by political organisations in Bangladesh. Sudden rallies, particularly those organised at night and involving groups arriving from different areas, can raise concerns about public safety and the maintenance of law and order.
However, the allegations against the two detainees have yet to be established through the legal process. Further information about their alleged involvement and the circumstances surrounding the attempted rallies may emerge as the police proceedings continue.
