Two men have been detained in Dinajpur after traffic police allegedly recovered a locally made one-shot gun and four rounds of live ammunition during a search of an unregistered motorcycle.
The incident took place at around 7.30pm on Tuesday, 22 September, during a routine checkpoint at Hospital Mor in Dinajpur town. Police said the motorcycle was stopped for verification before the two men were searched.
The detainees have been identified as Harun, 55, son of the late Abul Kashem of Daptoripara in Dinajpur Sadar upazila, and Md Raton, 20, son of Jahangir Alam of Shashtitala. Harun works as a pickup driver, while Raton is employed at a pickup garage.
According to traffic police, the two men were travelling towards Balubari from Lily Mor on an unregistered motorcycle. Traffic Sergeant Rupak Kumar Jha, who was on duty at Hospital Mor, signalled for them to stop. They complied with the instruction and brought the motorcycle to a halt.
Police said the behaviour of the two men appeared suspicious during the initial questioning. When officers moved to conduct a search, the two allegedly attempted to flee. They were subsequently detained and searched.
During the search, officers reportedly found a red plastic bag in Harun’s possession. Inside the bag was a locally manufactured pipe gun, commonly described as a one-shot gun, along with four rounds of live ammunition. The men were unable to produce any valid documents authorising possession of the firearm or ammunition, according to police.
Traffic constables Shahnewaz and Mehedi Hasan took part in the operation. The search was conducted in the presence of Traffic Inspector Amrit Sarkar. After the recovery, the two detainees, along with the firearm and ammunition, were handed over to Kotwali police station for further legal proceedings.
Rah inur Islam Khan, traffic department’s inspector in charge of administration, said the motorcycle was initially stopped as part of routine checks because it had no registration. During the verification process, officers became suspicious of the riders’ behaviour and decided to search them. The firearm and ammunition were subsequently recovered, he said.
Dinajpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic and Estate) Suman Ranjan Sarker said the two detainees would be produced before a court on Wednesday. He also said that a robbery case had previously been filed against Harun at Kotwali police station.
The latest incident began with a routine roadside inspection, but the discovery of a firearm and live ammunition has led to further legal proceedings. The recovered items have been handed over to the police station along with the detainees, while the circumstances surrounding their possession are expected to be examined as part of the investigation.
The allegations against the two men will now be dealt with through the legal process. Any further determination regarding the firearm, ammunition and the circumstances in which they were allegedly being carried will depend on the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.
