Two Local Councillors Arrested with Yaba Along Sharsha Border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have detained four suspected drug traffickers, including two sitting Union Parishad (UP) members, during an anti-smuggling operation along the Sharsha border in Jashore. The paramilitary force recovered 46 Yaba tablets and five mobile phones during the raid. The arrests took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Chandanpur College Crossing area near the Kaiba border, sparking intense speculation across the locality due to the political status of the detainees.

The authorities identified the arrested public representatives as Mostafa Kabir Faruk, aged 47, a councillor from the Chanduria area of Kalaroa upazila and son of the late Imanur Rahman, and Nizam Uddin, aged 38, a councillor from the Kadpur area of the same upazila and son of Robiul Islam. The remaining two detainees were identified as Abdus Salam, 43, son of Mohammad Ali from Chanduria, and Delwar Hossain, 36, son of Samshur Rahman from Kadpur.

According to intelligence sources within the BGB, security forces had been maintaining a strict vigil over cross-border syndicates in the region following reports of increased illicit drug transactions. Acting on specific covert data, a tactical team from the 21 BGB Battalion intercepted the four individuals at the Chandanpur College Crossing. A subsequent body search led to the discovery of the methamphetamine pills and communications equipment, which were hidden on their persons.

Lieutenant Colonel Mo. Nafiz Imtiaz Ahsan, the commanding officer of the 21 BGB Battalion, confirmed the arrests and stated that a formal criminal case has been registered under the Narcotics Control Act. The suspects have since been handed over to the Sharsha Police Station for further processing. He reiterated the force’s absolute intolerance towards smuggling, cross-border crime, and illegal infiltration. The commanding officer emphasised that rigorous patrolling and targeted surveillance would continue unabated to protect the youth from the grip of narcotics, regardless of the social or political standing of the perpetrators.
